Metta Loving Kindness makes you kinder, friendlier and more compassionate.
It is a meditation practice that transforms your heart & life by repeating simple phrases in your mind. Sounds odd right? I thought it did, but connecting to the sentiment behind the phrases is very powerful.
Metta packs a serious punch.
I went to a week long silent Metta Loving Kindness retreat last summer. Yep, that’s right – one full week of practicing Metta! No talking, just 7 days and nights of repeating the Loving Kindness phrases in my head.
What happened was incredibly powerful. The energy in my heart got overwhelmingly big. I couldn’t handle it.
I was on the verge of throwing up or passing out. Instead of waiting to find out which route my body was going to go, I left the meditation hall. Twice. Drinking tea in the cafeteria felt safer.
Going to a week long Metta retreat as your introduction to the practice is like attempting a black diamond when you are better matched for the bunny slopes. It’s going to be an intense ride! The beauty in having started full on is that I know the transformative power of this practice and I’m compelled to share it with you now. And lucky for you, I’m serving it in a bite sized piece.
When I returned from the Loving Kindness retreat I shared with you about what Metta is. NOW I am guiding you through the actual practice with this Guided Metta Meditation.
In Metta Loving Kindness, we start by wishing loving kindness for ourselves and will move on to radiate those wishes outward toward others.
The phrases you repeat in this meditation are:
May I be safe
May I be healthy and strong
May I be happy and peaceful
May I live with ease in this world
Metta will help you cultivate an unconditional love that shines on all beings similar to how the sun unconditionally shines on all of us.
Keep in mind that while simple, the Metta loving kindness meditation is not easy.
